Are Employees Tired of Being Treated Like Children at Work?

Writer: marionriehemannmarionriehemann
Leaders often work too hard, take on too much responsibility, and try to motivate people by giving solutions. They complain that employees don’t take ownership or drive change, but their very effort to control behavior is what’s holding them back. It’s time to create environments that encourage ownership and change—based on what people understand and believe in.

What if work could be more fun, more meaningful, and more human-centered, instead of profit-driven?

I often coach leaders who work too hard, take on too much responsibility, and feel compelled to bring solutions, motivate people, and offer advice. They may also complain that employees “don’t drive the change” or “don’t take ownership, even though I’ve encouraged them to.” What do they have in common? A blind spot. Their very effort to MAKE people behave a certain way is what’s holding them back.

The focus should shift.

Today, it’s about creating circumstances that make it most likely for people to take ownership and drive change—based on what they understand, choose, and believe. I believe workplaces need adult-to-adult conversations to be truly progressive, effective, and future-fit.

But what does it really mean to work progressively?

What answers have you found? What if work could be fun? I mean, who said it shouldn’t be? Why isn’t it more often?

Why are so many of us disengaged? Is it the leaders, the bureaucracy, or maybe us?

Here’s the thing: I believe the problem is multifaceted—and it is an adaptive challenge that invites us to evolve. What if we shifted from a profit-centered model to a human-centered one, where purpose drives everything we do?

And if this approach works, (which it does, especially for the bottom line) then, why aren’t we seeing it everywhere? Are we waiting for a “miracle moment” or... is it time to make the change now?

Need more proof? It exists!

Do we need more conscious leaders, pioneering investors, and courageous shareholders? Absolutely. Do we need a wake-up call for those still stuck in the “old way”? Definitely.

At Second Freedom, I’m building on 17 years of expertise in executive and team coaching, leadership development, and transformational programs to help organizations embrace change as an opportunity for growth.

Today, I believe I need to focus on redefining leadership by unbossing it, on self-management practices, as well as necessary mindsets for implementing them. I’m here for the radical (root-level) changes that actually work.

I know what doesn’t work—trust me, I’ve seen it—and I’ve got data on what does.

I’m on a mission to provide proven practices and tailored programs for those who believe, like me, that self-management is the future. Of course, there is no cookie-cutter solution, each individual, team, and organization has unique requirements to be addressed. And: this isn’t an either/or situation—restructuring and personal development must go hand in hand.

So, what’s it going to be? Keep riding the comfortable, outdated wave—or are you ready to dive into the future of work?

Stay tuned for my events and offers—and start asking yourself: Is it time to wake up? Let’s do this together.

How?

We see that most transformations focus on the restructuring side of things; it seems the easier approach - after all, human beings can be messy and unpredictable. Yet, we know that the greatest leverage for sustainable transformation actually lies in the upgrade of mindsets and ways of thinking in employees

To address this effectively, we offer - for example - the Transformational Leadership Coaching Program (TLCP). If you are interested in learning more, click below:
